Whenever you see a CD put together by a studio musician, you can be sure that the quality of construction will be unsurpassed. You know the players on the album are the best musicians a friendship can earn. How much better for us when it's a bass player that heads up the list, and how much better for the list when that friendly player is Freebo.
Mention Freebo to others and you'll hear, "Oh, yeah, the guy who played with Bonnie Raitt," or "Yeah, the guy with all the hair," or "Isn't that the cat in the hat?" But, like anytime opinions are expressed, it's so much more than that. This album is Freebo. Normally in these ReVuz I won't re-offer stuff that can be found on the sites linked from the covers above, but the description of Freebo's album can only be done justice with his words: "I call this collection of songs a record because that's exactly what it is; a record of where I've been and where I am. These songs express my philosophy of life and love in addition to the many feelings that come with life's experiences." Listen to his account, and reaffirm your love of life. I have the disc in as I write, so you'll probably notice a happy tinge to this revu. "It Comes From The Heart" is on now, so no apology is necessary.
Also, the players or stories of songs won't normally be mentioned here, even when the list is as astonishing as this one is, because you're always encouraged to visit the author's site. If at first you don't recognize more than a few of the many names on this life's work, read on of their accomplishments, because hearing them you'll know you knew them from somewhere.
So what DO I mention here? So what indeed. All I can offer in these ReVuz is honest opinions of the music put out by other bass players. Truly I suppose most visitors who passed by this way, have been gone since they saw the first link to Freebo's site, and they're now surfing with these tunes while awaiting delivery of "The End Of The Beginning." For those of you who have returned to "See what this BassSick guy says about my favorite album," all I can say is, "Ditto." My opinions are of little value to anyone who knows what they want when they hear it. Freebo is very generous with the samples in his website. The RealAudio clips below are made up of quick 10- to 15-second pieces from each tune. Listen to the variety of styles this bass-playing tuba player plays. There's also a short little bit of his D.O.G., Garbo, barking (my dog, Jack, seems to be in love with Garbo, and already made me make a .wav of her happy bark anyway).
You can hear how Freebo expresses his philosophy AND feelings in the lyrics and groove of each song. Nothing is more rewarding than work that comes from the heart, except when the labor is shared by your friends. There is no Hustle on this disc, no monkees, no minudo, no vanilli & nothing contrived by music moguls to strike your wallet. There is only pure creativity channeled through beautiful talent that hits you in that spot where money doesn't matter.
"We're all a part of the Big Chain," and pray that the mind of humankind learns that the feeling of those words is written in each of our hearts. "Somehow."
I think we're ready for "The Beginning Of The Middle."
